To the reader - The affairs and history of Hungary have caused controversy because of several mutations and revisions which are now presented to the world as the epitome of truth, incorporating wider European history, and thereby, not only legitimising Hungarian history but providing causality for Europe's historical events. Ages ago, this unknown and unheard of nation arose from its ruins to become a mighty kingdom. As it grew larger and more powerful, by Urgencies of Fate, it declined, then just as quickly recovered. By the inconstancy of its fate, Hungary either added terror or hope to its neighbours. While these people struggled for their liberty, intending for future glory and happiness, Justice of Providence decreed them a hard-working people, but their energy and rapid success have been undermined by many incongruent successes and failures which have almost exhausted them in the course of the last twelve-hundred years in war and peace. They dared to achieve beyond their Fortune and Ability, extending their power over adjoining nations that while their story is being read, as far as Asia and Europe are concerned, are once again subject to review as tributaries to this nation of Hungary.

James Howell, England, 1664

James Howell's immortal words are, in essence, what my books are about, and more. They are about the historical context preceding even James Howell's time. Carpathian-Turkic Slavs resisted imperial suzerainty since the sixth century giving rise to the powerful Bathory dynasty, and the most powerful woman that had ever lived - Countess Elizabeth Bathory. The Chrysalis series end with her history. She was already an unknown person even in Howell's time.

Howell's writing is important because even in 1664, there were people who already knew that Hungary's history was an illusion created by the Habsburgs. He should know. He had the ear of the English Crown. England, as well as other non-Habsburg states were paying very close attention to what was happening in Hungary, and with good reason. The hell which the Habsburgs had unleashed on Europe five decades before, between 1618 and 1648, were apocalyptic, and still vividly fresh in some minds. There had never been a war like it before, nor since - ever! Two generations later, however, the memory of this cataclysm had faded. Now, the Holy Roman Empire continued to prosecute its war against Transylvanians and its allies, the Ottomans as it had since 1526. Nations were competing among themselves for scarce resources. Wars were being waged over international trade routes. The Austrian Habsburgs, thanks to their Spanish cousins who were bloated with pillaged New World gold and silver, were able to borrow as much money as needed to employ most of Europe's mercenary armies to do as they pleased, with whom they pleased. At stake in Hungary was the future course the world would take. Either the the Habsburgs would be defeated, or the Habsburgs would dictate their totalitarian terms to the rest of the world. Unbeknown to Howell, or anyone else, the world was already on a collision course with future German empires which would unleash two, almost equally cataclysmic apocalypses three centuries hence. Its all connected.

The victors, as they always do, wrote the history books. But all this happened after Elizabeth Bathory's time. What happened before, the reasons which led her to take the actions she did are what my books are about. Its not an easy history to write because very little of it exists in any one history book. It's not the history we are supposed to know.

These books are a story of us. Toward the end of the Medieval Dark Ages, a Carpathian Slavic-Turkic people's intentionally revised history served to hide their true cultural identity. It's how, historically, Ungaria becomes "unknown and unheard of" to metamorphose into a place called Hungary. It's because of this people's millennium-long struggle for their life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness against European imperial tyranny centuries before the Age of Reason rediscovered this fundamental and universal human idea in a New World.

"J. B. S. Haldane," Eric Hoffer said, "counts fanaticism among the only four really important inventions made between 3000 B.C and 1400 A.D.… it is strange to think that in receiving this malady of the soul the world also received a miraculous instrument for raising societies and nations from the dead-an instrument of resurrection." Haldane wrote: "Between 3000 BC and AD 1400 there were probably only four really important inventions, namely the general use of iron, paved roads, voting, and religious intolerance."

The Hellenistic period seeded imperialism with the death of Alexander the Great. His generals carved up his empire between themselves. Ptolemy snapped up Egypt. The Roman Empire was born with the battle of Actium, when Octavian defeated Anthony and Cleopatra (the last Egyptian queen of the Ptolemaic dynasty). The Roman Imperial period seeded Western civilization (as we know it). The Roman Christian period seeded Western morality and history (as we know it). It inherited its virtues from the imperial Romans. And here we are. Still repeating the same mistakes as in the past.

The Roman Christian Church (the Vatican) gave us our Metamorphosis of Odium - you know, imperial hatred, apocalyse, resurrection, greed and genocide. Modern historians call it colonialism. The Vatican (not Christianity) in Rome orchestrated major failures as it competed with other Christian churches for universal supremacy - imperial style - and history was one of their weapons with which to shackle the minds of millions. It will never admit it, but its undeniable. The Church's orchestrated Dark Ages seeded our collective Western histories with its infallible versions of national origin stories of cultural identity among other infallible "truths." Only one place in this medieval tragedy stood up to Rome - Ungaria (partly, today's Magyar Hungary, but then also encompassing Eastern Austria, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Romania, Eastern Ukraine, Northern Bulgaria, and Northern Serbia). This was a place of Carpathian Liberty which opposed the Vatican and its Holy Roman Empire. Today, very slowly, however, historians are finally beginning to accept that most of the Vatican's history of Western civilisation, if not all of not all of it, is simply propaganda myth invented by the Church. The Church is the author of most history as you know it. Without knowing this, you will remain historically ignorant in realistic terms! Without understanding this historic reality, one simply cannot write truthful history of anything. This is the premise of my first two books: Chrysalis I: Metamorphosis of Odium; and Chrysalis II: Carpathian Liberty. These two books are an introduction to Countess Elizabeth Bathory, the most powerful woman that ever lived.

These books are about Western cultural metamorphoses during the Medieval Dark Ages to explain the origin of the sixteenth-century Age of Reformation. Why bother? Because, fourteen years after Martin Luther died, Elizabeth Bathory was born. She was a Hungarian Countess, perhaps the most powerful woman that ever lived. Like Luther, Bathory was also a reformer. However, unlike Luther, she was beholden to nobody for anything. As a member of the highest elite class of her society, she had the means to effect change in the political order of Central Europe. As a Bathory, she was, literally a royal Hungarian. Instead of merely enjoying the benefits of her status she was entitled to for her pleasure, she did the opposite. She sought to destroy the most powerful entity in Europe - the Habsburg Holy Roman Empire. She desired to restore Ungarian life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in Hungary. Why? What did she know that others did not, and still do not? What compelled her to this goal? It turns out that it was her ancestral duty. She knew the real history of her country, of Europe, Slavs, Turks, the Ottoman Empire, and why Hungary was in a dire state of general chaos and war. All of these actors are vitally critical to make sense of Europe's otherwise still incomplete and misunderstood past.

Chrysalis I: Metamorphosis of Odium and Chrysalis II: Carpathian Liberty are accidental books. There was only supposed to have been one book - that about Elizabeth Bathory's history, about her contributions to European history, to debunk her myth by answering questions about what happened to her and Hungary. This project quickly became a dead end. Historiological research yielded very little on the subject. If anything, history only yields disinformation concerning her, her family, her country, and generally even of many of Europe's historical narratives. The woman is simply missing, erased from history. Worse still, the history of her country is filled with too many inconsistencies to be plausible. Europe's history is understood as if Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Romania, Croatia and Serbia, indeed all of Central and Eastern Europe beyond Greece was completely inconsequential within the broader historical context. Something happened in Europe by design which its social architects did not wish us to know. And so the original project went on hold. A new project began to answer specific questions concerning principal historical causes and effects which would provide answers not typically found in any one specific book. The Chrysalis books were born.

Although it is impossible to know with absolute certainty, enough primary archival information still exists to extract enough data to fill many historiological gaps. Elizabeth Bathory's world was the product of many great medieval tragedies. What happened to Europe, specifically in the context of Carpathia which came to be known as the "Kingdom of Hungary," is critically important. But it's also a heretical history to this very day. Without it, however, one cannot understand Elizabeth Bathory's sixteenth and seventeenth-century world. Without it, one cannot understand her motivations. Without it, one cannot tell her story. The Chrysalis books, are, therefore, introductory books to provide the context to how Elizabeth Bathory's world came into being. It answers fundamental questions concerning the origins of the peoples of Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, the Bathory dynasty, and their repression.

They are a compendium of researched old, once banned, now very obscure works. The Chrysalis series is about men and women who collectively wrecked European civilisation in the Medieval Dark Ages. It's also the story of men and women who tried to prevent a designed apocalypse but ultimately failed. Their ancestors witnessed resurrections of the same debilitating hatreds born of ignorance. What happened during the Medieval Dark Ages is almost unbelievable were it not documented. Central European Carpathian cultures which called it home were always the historic nemeses of two Western European imperial powers - the Roman Catholic Church and its Holy Roman Empire – the divine imperium and pontificum. Even they, because of their history of convenience, are not fully understood by the public at large. The Church's popes ruled with divine absolutism during much of the medieval period - the first one thousand years of their reign. Their secular and temporal laws were infallible. Their infallible DNA is on every European event from the fourth to the fourteenth century without exception. Holy emperors executed papal pontifical will with brutal efficiency. The history we know claims that popes and their cohorts were not the cause of Europe's many dire calamities, but evil, sinful secular men and women – heretics and heathens - who caused the many unbelievable upheavals within European societies. Nothing is further from the truth. It was the Vatican that ruled with totalitarian brutality over everything, not emperors or kings. What becomes apparent is that the Church's totalitarian grip on Europe began to wane at the height of the Medieval Dark Ages and ended by the fourteenth century. Holy Roman Emperors had learned to think for themselves. That's when papal and imperial roles began to reverse. As the books will demonstrate, the reason that the Vatican's powers became severely curtailed was because Carpathian Slavic- Turkic Ungars refused to submit their liberties to Rome or Regensburg. Heretic Ungars spearheaded this epic struggle, with their heretic and heathen allies - enlightened Europeans and Caliphates - to end Rome's and Regensburg's genocidal insanity.

It All Began With A Painting

Before I began to write, I was just another "Joe" on the planet. I had a brilliant career with the best employer - ever. Then, one day, an old master painting surfaced at Sotheby's in New York, New York, USA. Everything changed. The portrait is dated 1580 and was one of several masterpieces to be auctioned off in June. The auctioneer listed the portrait as "Portrait of a Lady, three quarter length, in a ruff with matching lace cap and cuffs."

A Resemblance to a Countess

Could it be? The Sotheby's portrait bears some resemblance to a portrait in the Hungarian National Museum. It's that of the seventeenth-century Countess Elizabeth Bathory. It's a well-known period work of fiction, but the only portrait which, up to that time, was known to exist of the famous woman - a historical personage I am very familiar with, growing up as a boy. My father had written about her and I have heard the stories more times than I remember.

A private collector purchased the portrait. Analysis indicated that the Sotheby's purchase is that of the seventeenth-century noble woman. A website was built - - dedicated to this exciting find. I wrote three articles: One about the painting; Another about her literary myth; and one about various other portraits which are either forgeries or fantasy portraits. The website and articles generated much interest.

The Book Idea

A new draft article for evolves into an idea for a book. I am urged by my very close friend - a proud and noble Slovak - to write a book about Elizabeth. This will not be just another Elizabeth Bathory book - of myth and legend as is the standard norm - but of real history book about her country, her people, her family, and her life. The next few months produce several draft manuscripts.

Then the proverbial brick wall - a dead end. Writing stops! Extremely little is known about the woman in real terms. Worse still, European history is replete with myths and legends about her country. There's very little information about the Bathorys - absolutely nothing about Elizabeth. Something terrible happened here. Why is nothing written of them? Why are there so many gaps in historical events? Why is the history of Hungary, Transylvania, Poland and Slovakia - all of Europe for that matter, uniformly one-sided, and so perfectly murky? What was it we are not supposed to know? So many questions. It was back to the drawing board. A simple project suddenly grew into a titanic undertaking. Still, research would need to go back as far as necessary so as to expose obscured histories. This context would enable me to know what she knew, to explain what most likely happened to her world and to her.

The research was absolutely astounding. The more I dug into old manuscripts, the further I went back in time to try and understand the many "whys" the more I discovered deliberately hidden truths. An obscure past of a heretical Slavic-Turkic Carpathian peoples began to be illuminated. This was a history of a people who are not written about in any history book - not openly, and certainly not honestly. This was a history of a people and place who simply refused to surrender their liberty to a totalitarian regime founded on religious intolerance and extremism. This was the reason for the many "whys!" This was the reason why certain histories disappeared from history books. The historical bread crumbs yielded a picture of classic European colonialism. This was the reason why the Bathorys evaporated from cultural memory! All was beginning to make sense. The task of retracing history of the missing Bathorys became possible.

Eureka! The First Draft!

Now, finally, old medieval codexes began to make sense and historical fiction easy to identify and avoid. By August, 2018, the first draft was complete. This was the historical context I was looking for and Elizabeth Bathory's unfinished story - a huge amount of writing. And so, I decided to split the work into two volumes - the historical context and the Elizabeth story. I needed to finish the context properly first. Another re-write!

The second draft - the historical context - was complete. It had the title, "Divine Metamorphosis." The text was still too long! Another re-write! More text removed, saved for another volume.

The third draft - the historical context - was shorter now, but also had some new text to sharpen the theme. Consequently, the manuscript also had a new title, "Chrysalis: Metamorphosis of Odium." Yet another re-read. No. The text was still too long and the title, while appropriate, did not appropriately convey the full meaning of the entire book! Another re-write. Soon the manuscript would be ready for the publisher.

Chrysalis Books

The word comes back from the editor. In a nutshell the message was "good work but the text is too long - please consider splitting the book into two books." Yet another rewrite and fifth draft - the historical context - this time as two books. Not only that, but the copy editing began. The first manuscript received the title, "Chrysalis I: Metamorphosis of Odium" with my cover proposal. The second manuscript received the title, "Chrysalis II: Carpathian Liberty". It too was re-submitted with a cover proposal. Four years after writing began, Chrysalis Books is born!

There are five chapters: Odium Chrysalis (Chrysalis of Hatred); Cultus Odium (Culture of Hatred); Cultus Apocalypsis (Culture of Apocalypse); Cultus Resurrectionis (Culture of Resurrection); and Cultus Imperium (Culture of Empire). This book does not claim absolute truths, but it speaks for those who can no longer speak for themselves by the histories they witnessed, wrote about, and which defined their ancestors and descendants, including the most powerful woman that ever lived - Countess Elizabeth Bathory. She tried to change the world; she paradoxically succeeded and failed. But what drove her? What did she know, we do not? What is her history? To begin to understand all this, one must travel back in time to when it began, when truth first became obscured, and when European society - Western culture - went horribly wrong. It is why her world was the way it was.

Today, historiological "truths" of European Medieval Dark Ages, at best, exist as dim flashes of information in ancient manuscripts. A very interconnected European medieval history has much more, but inconvenient historiological information to informs us of events, names, places, and dates, but like a giant, complicated jigsaw puzzle. Unfortunately, many pieces are still missing, none more so than that of Carpathia. Consequently, an incomplete, theoretical picture of historical reality remains. There's a reason for it. Throughout history, Europeans struggled for Humility, Humanity and Liberty, but only Carpathian Ungars maintained and struggled to keep it for more than a millennium - from about 600 to 1711. Their history has gone missing, supplanted by myths. Their greatest leaders are caricatures of Gothic horror literature, and their greatest traitors are their heroes. Their monuments are everywhere. Carpathia's history does not exist in Western consciousness. What is it about Carpathia we are not supposed to know? Its missing medieval jigsaw puzzle pieces, when liberated from obscure archives, then reassembled, and inserted into the macro context of centuries, however, allows us to understand why. The period covered in this book is roughly seven centuries. It's a litany of tragic moral failures. It begins with spiritual leaders who consistently failed in their moral duty because they misguidedly assumed a Roman imperial culture from the outset. It ends with the creation of a repressed imperial Ungaria and the supposed "first kings of Hungary." Events within this book's pages cover most of the first great pendulum swing of European Cultural "Chrysalis" - it's "Metamorphosis of Odium". It explores the complexity of why, and how European culture became one of intolerance and hatred which tried to extinct all non-conformists within their divine Medieval European World Order. It explains why it was perfectly ethical and moral, and why society believed in the Resurrection of all things good after the final Apocalypse - this order's primary vision. Resisting all this, of course, were all Carpathian cultures, the last being the Slavic-Turkic Ungars. To the Medieval European World Order, they, like the Caliphates, were the greatest heretics and heathens of the Dark Ages. These civilisations were the last refuge of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness in a world which had none.

There are five chapters: Cultus Adeptum (Culture of Genocide); Adeptum Libertas Perditionis (Freedom to Achieve Perdition); Cultus Avaritus (Culture of Greed); Cultus Avaritus in Finem Dierum (Culture of Greed in the End of Days); and Bathory Chrysalis. This book is a sequel to Chrysalis I: Metamorphosis of Odium. The time period covered is roughly from the early eleventh to late fourteenth centuries. The book explores the complexity of the Late Medieval period from a Carpathian, Slavic-Turkic perspective. An extremist, elitist European world sunk deeper into human depravity - of European and Middle Eastern genocides and of material greed. These depravities gave the rise to Hohenstaufen, Arpad, Bathory, and Osman dynasties. Together, they kindled a period of philosophical awakening - a fundamental reformation of the feudal order. Thanks to them, the supreme Vatican lost control over its Holy Roman Empire for the first time. Such heresies had responses too - the Apostolic Inquisition, Avignon Papacy, Mongol Invasions of Europe and the Middle East, and the extermination of non-compliant ruling European dynasties namely Hohenstaufen and Arpad. Only the Bathorys survived, but they had to endure a debilitating war to do so. One dynasty - Habsburg - sought to profit from the chaos. Indeed they did. Their arrival marks the end of first great pendulum swing of European cultural metamorphosis. Soon, it would be Elizabeth Bathory's duty to change the world.

The beginning of the end of first great pendulum swing of European cultural metamorphosis and the birth of not just Carpathian Liberty, but liberty in general came with the election of Pope Urban II. It was he, who embarked on a Vatican policy to re-establish the supremacy of the Vatican over everyone and everything. The mainstay of his plan was to wrench power from the Western European monarchies which, aside from France, were almost exclusively subservient to German Holy Roman emperors, not the pope. Furthermore, Both the papacy and the empire had to contend with non-Catholic, but Christian Central and Eastern European monarchies who were allied with the Byzantine Empire and its Eastern Orthodox Christian Church. Aiding Slavs and Byzantines were the other heretics, the Muslim Caliphate of southern Spain, North Africa, the Middle East, and Asia Minor against the Catholic West. The Western world was a powder keg ready to explode in an Apocalyptic war. Pope Urban launched his master plan. These were the crusades which, in fact, and aside of the First Crusade, were tragic failures. These wars were about three things which truly mattered to Rome. First, to create new obedient monarchies from the minor nobility which fought in the Crusades. Second, to extend Catholic territory. Third, to exterminate (not Catholicise) all populations within non-Catholic lands which Crusaders conquered. Genocides were born as we know them. These succeeded in parts of heretic France and northern Europe. They failed everywhere else. Rather, Rome's genocidal policies had severe blowback. The heretical Christian East held firmly with their Muslim Caliphate allies. In fact, by the time these wars ended, not only had Catholic Europe bled itself dry, but combined with the onset of severe climate change (known as the Little Ice Age), Apostolic inquisitions, and severe kleptocratic greed, the Catholic Church finally lost its struggle for infallible supremacy forever. From this Hell, three great dynasties arose - Hohenstaufen, Habsburg, and Bathory. The first was extincted by the Vatican. The third would be extincted by the second centuries later. The second would make the powerful Vatican servile to its new imperial whims. Standing in the Habsburg way were the Bathorys of Ungaria (later Hungary). It would be the Bathorys and Habsburgs who would wage all manner of conflicts with their allies against this new Habsburg empire for centuries. It is why few know about the Bathorys at all - Habsburg and Vatican historians made sure of it.

A Cautionary Word

For Westerners, regardless where in Europe our ancestry lies, this history is a story of us. Unavoidably, this is a history which involves, not faith, but historical spiritual elites. Many today misguidedly equate present-day spirituality to medieval times. Believe me. These institutions are not same today as they were then. However, because many of the historiological gaps in our knowledge of European history involve these institutions, the subject is, nevertheless, still considered taboo. One cannot argue with faith. It's why nobody in academic circles will touch it for fear of being ostracised or worse. It's not without consequences. Then there's Central European Carpathia, otherwise known in the medieval period as Ungaria, is a place virtually non-existent in Western cultural consciousness today. If history were a map, then there would simply be a big, dark, nameless void, smack in the middle of Europe! There or no "Carpathian History" sections in any library or bookstore anywhere! It's no accident. Our European, or Western cultural identity, like history, ends at the German-Polish, Austrian-Slovak, Austrian-Hungarian and Austrian-Slovene frontier, just as it did in medieval times. We have been conditioned since medieval times to believe that on the other side of these frontiers are proverbial evil dragons.

Not convinced? Mention "Transylvania" to a random westerner and the first thing which pops into their mind is "Dracula." Mention "Russia" and people go into defence mode of imagined Soviet spies or "Ivan the Terrible." Mention "Elizabeth Bathory" or "Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, "and you draw a blank look. Mention "Habsburg" or "Roman" or "pope" and people light up like a light bulb. It gets worse the farther one travels from Europe, like North America. On the western side of these frontiers, in the Romance and Germanic language-speaking word, live "civilised, good Europeans" - the British, Germans, French, Dutch, Austrians, Swiss, Italians, and Spaniards, and so on. On the other eastern side of these frontiers in the East live those dreaded "barbarian" Slavs, the bogeymen since medieval times. But there is an exception here. In the middle of these Slavs is an altogether special place. It's unique on the planet. Sandwiched between these Slavs are today's Magyars (Hungarians). Their nationalists believe they are descendants of Attila the Hun. Why argue? It's all a matter of faith. But if Hungarian nationalism is truth, then it means that Hungary is the only place on the planet Earth where where universal laws of the cosmos cease to apply. Mention "Islam" or "Caliphate" and hysterical people will most likely call the authorities.

All these beliefs are relevant to these books. Nothing good can come from the East which is why, in the West, we stand on guard against it's vampires, werewolves, witches, warlocks, demons and dragons. We are conditioned to distrust everything from the East, still associated with evil – our Western cultural inheritance from medieval times. It's the achievement of the medieval culture of odium at work in the present day. Ironically, it took a Russian Slav to point out, that on this planet we are all true "Pavlov dogs" - conditioned to behave in a certain way. Not surprisingly then, hardly anyone in the West knows Central European history. Why should anyone care? Maybe because Western culture is impoverished by it. In reality, despite the collective condemnation of memory of the Bathorys and so many other Europeans, persecutors of truths, by their historical illusions could never destroy everything. Factual information still exists if one is prepared to scour hundreds of old books from the fifteenth century onwards. Learned scholars have been writing about these truths for centuries. It's just that nobody has incorporated into a single work like the Chrysalis series. Heretical, obscure works were hidden by the powers who wished this information to remain hidden from public knowledge. Thus, by careful research and analysis, it's possible to thread together the obscure reality of history to begin framing a more accurate picture of the many historical gaps in knowledge to help explain history's illusions - like Hungary.

Always Remember...

Any history book, regardless by whom, where, when, why, or what, had been, or will be written, will be challenged by "fact checkers." This exercise will typically rely on sources such as other books and their "truths." Three Abrahamic religions produced five of the greatest (and related) books of faith and history ever written by humankind, the: Biblical Hebrew Old Testament (c.1200-c.100 BCE); Biblical Hebrew Tanakh (c.700 - c.100 BCE); Rabbinic Jewish Talmud (c.70-c.500 CE); Biblical Christian New Testament (c.70-382 CE); and Muslim Qur'an (609-632 CE). All five were written by divine instruction and in that chronological order. These sacred texts have mostly remained unchanged since being scribed. These are the ultimate books of truths. All have been the source of theological interpretation ever since. Yet, even among holy men and women, these holy books are a source of both unity and discord. If these men and women cannot agree, who then has supreme dominion over the reality of anything? Not history and that is a fact!

We would like to believe that all history is accurate. It's in our nature to believe those whom we consider experts and whom we respect. We cannot know everything. But, as Jane Roberts puts it, the reader should remember that "all expectations are the blocks with which you build your reality. There are no exceptions to this rule." One should listen to all, believe nobody, and think for one's self.
